They saw you and they fell in love

Their hearts a-flight, they soared above

I missed the chance to see your face

My soul, my heart, roams out-of-place

I lost you to the tides of time

I missed my chance to make you mine

Our distance breaks my heart in two

I plot a course – a way to you

I sail to you from my heart’s shore

The winds, they rage; the waters roar

The reefs of time halt every flow

The journey ends with time’s death-blow

I send to you a dove in flight

Upon your heart, God’s peace alight

I send to you my heart in flight

Upon your heart, God’s grace alight

You turn my way – all things efface

The winds and waves – all bow in grace

You gaze my way – all things efface

My self, my heart – all bow in grace

My name soars from your blessed lips

And in that kiss, all seas eclipse

And in that kiss, may all eclipse

Al-salāmu ‘alayka, Ya Rasūlullāh.

Some leaves are born to fall

But some seem born to fly.

Some leaves tumble like stone

But some are lifted high.

Some leaves just head for earth

But some first seek the sky.

Some leaves don’t feel at all

But some have hearts that sigh.

Some leaves do not know when

But some know it is nigh.

Some leaves can’t stand their fate

But some in longing cry.

Some leaves demand more time

But some will not die dry. 

Some a bless’d breeze await –

Let’s pray that’s you and I.

There is a place

A wondrous space

Your journey’s end

To meet the Friend

If you should ask:

“How hard the task?”

Not hard, they say

But don’t delay

If you should say,

“Please show the way”

Or, “Where O where –

Do take me there!” 

It’s not for me

You must agree

To find your heart

Or play your part

It’s up to you

To journey true

Look in, not out

Be firm, don’t doubt

A step, arrive

Your heart revive

The Friend’s in wait

Walk through His gate

Your heart He owns

Give up your throne

Don’t be a fool

It’s His to rule

De-throne your self

And claim yourself

And then you’ll see

What’s meant to be

Within His care

Who else is there?

Within His care

What else is there?

What else is there

Within his care?

To Him converse

In prose and verse

You’re here but not

So ends your plot

Your journey’s end

You’ve found the Friend

When was He so distant?

Perceived as non-existent?

When was He never there?

To hold you in His care?

To catch you when you fall?

To speed you when you stall?

To map your road ahead?

To speak your words unsaid?

To fill your night with light?

To let your wings take flight?

To rain upon you grace?

To turn to you His face?

To save you from your-self?

And give you of His-self?

When did His giving halt?

Were you, or Him, at fault?

Who cut the ties that bind?

If so, what could you find?

What is, besides His love?

Below, East, West, above? 

So close – you cannot see;

So real – what else can be?

Your foolish self do shun.

To Him – by Him – do run.

Your palms to Him let rise.

In Him, be born – Arise!

Does the water demand where to flow?

Should I turn here, there, or onward go? 

It asks not why, how fast or how slow 

For its path it knows it does not know

It dreams it’s a leaf or melting snow 

Or clear sky with clouds on its tableaux

Or silence on a highland plateau 

Or a waning moon or dusk’s soft glow

Its wants, its will — all it must forego

A self naught but a sun-filled shadow

In whatever shines of joy and woe

For then, not far, only a stone’s throw 

Lush gardens under which rivers flow
