The Reality of Hubb-Love

A scholar-saint once stated:

جَرَتْ مَسْأَلَةٌ فِي الْمَحَبَّةِ بِمَكَّةَ – أَعَزَّهَا اللَّهُ تَعَالَى – أَيَّامَ الْمَوْسِمِ، فَتَكَلَّمَ الشُّيُوخُ فِيهَا. وَكَانَ الْجُنَيْدُ أَصْغَرَهُمْ سِنًّا. فَقَالُوا: هَاتِ مَا عِنْدَكَ يَا عِرَاقِيُّ. فَأَطْرَقَ رَأْسَهُ، وَدَمِعَتْ عَيْنَاهُ. ثُمَّ قَالَ: عَبْدٌ ذَاهِبٌ عَنْ نَفْسِهِ، مُتَّصِلٌ بِذِكْرِ رَبِّهِ، قَائِمٌ بِأَدَاءِ حُقُوقِهِ، نَاظِرٌ إِلَيْهِ بِقَلْبِهِ، أَحْرَقَتْ قَلْبَهُ أَنْوَارُ هَيْبَتِهِ. وَصَفَا شُرْبُهُ مِنْ كَأْسِ وُدِّهِ. وَانْكَشَفَ لَهُ الْجَبَّارُ مِنْ أَسْتَارِ غَيْبِهِ. فَإِنْ تَكَلَّمَ فَبِاللَّهِ. وَإِنْ نَطَقَ فَعَنِ اللَّهِ. وَإِنْ تَحَرَّكَ فَبِأَمْرِ اللَّهِ. وَإِنْ سَكَنَ فَمَعَ اللَّهِ. فَهُوَ بِاللَّهِ وَلِلَّهِ وَمَعَ اللَّهِ.

فَبَكَى الشُّيُوخُ وَقَالُوا: مَا عَلَى هَذَا مَزِيدٌ. جَزَاكَ اللَّهُ يَا تَاجَ الْعَارِفِينَ.

A question regarding [the reality of] ḥubb-love was brought forth in Mecca – May Allāh Exalt it in Esteem – during the days of Hajj. So the Scholars [of the inward realities] began to discuss it. [Sayyid] Junayd [May Allah Sanctify His Soul] was among them and the youngest of all. So they said: “Come, what do you have to say [about this] O ‘Iraqī?” He [Junayd] lowered his head, tears trickling down his eyes. Then he said:

“[Ḥubb-love is]: An ‘abd [slave] that has parted ways with his nafs [lower self]; connected to [and by] the Remembrance of His Lord; constantly upholding His due rights; always gazing upon Him with his [spiritual] heart; incinerated by the effulgent lights of His Divine, Overwhelming-Awe; his [spiritual] drink made ever-pure from the Cup of His Tender, Affectionate Love; revealing to him, The Compelling-Mender from the layered veils of His unseen realm. And therefore, if he speaks, it is by Allāh; if he breaks his silence, it is about Allāh; if he moves about, it is by the Command of Allāh; if he remains still and motionless, it is with Allāh. For he is by Allāh, for Allāh and with Allāh.”

Thereupon the Scholars began to weep and said: “Nothing can possibly be added to this. May Allāh reward you, O Crown of The True, Intimate Knowers of Allāh.”

Seizing the Days

Assalamu’alaykum.

We pray you are all well, by the grace of Allah.

We are in the first ten days of Dhul Hijja. Good deeds (‘amal) during these ten days are better than ‘amal on any other days of the year.

If we let them pass by like any regular day because we don’t know their value, we are being negligent. If we know and we still act in a regular manner, then we are truly unintelligent.

During these special days He offers to me, we must give himma (resolve) to our nafs (self) to seize the opportunity and seek from Allah ﷻ more of His forgiveness, His Divine spiritual gifts and nearness to Him. I seek rectification of my problems by orienting myself completely to Him. Let me orient my mind and heart to Him. If my focus and desire are all directed towards Him, then He will suffice me in all my other concerns.

May Allah ﷻ grant us the himma to not miss the special openings and rewards during these ten days and orient our hearts to Him always. Amin.

The Best Days

Assalamu’alaykum.

We pray you are all well, by the grace of Allah.

We have entered into the blessed days of Dhul Hijjah. We will reap only what we sow.

Rasulullah ﷺ teaches us that there are no days more beloved in deeds to Allah than these days. And the Day of ‘Arafa is when Allah sets most of His servants free from the Fire.

May Allah strengthen us through these days to devote as much time as we can to ‘ibada.

The daily practices of believers contains so much diverse ‘ibada to practice on and
emphasize: Qiyam al-layl, morning and evening adhkar, salawat on Rasulillah ﷺ, Qur’an, du’a, sunan salawat, duha salah, salawat in jama’a and in the masajid, dhikr after salah, siyam, sadaqa, khidma, khalwa (seclusion) time, and muraqaba (watchfulness) of Allah and our akhlaq.

Fasting during these ten days is especially meritorious. Rasulullah ﷺ said: “Fasting the day of `Arafa expiates the sins of two years: the past one and the coming one.” (Muslim)

May Allah help us to turn to Him in humility and need. Let us remember ourselves, our families, the entire Suhba family, and all Muslims, past, present and future, in our du‘a. May we find freedom from the Fire and the fire within ourselves. Amin.

Unity of the Believers

In the spirit of tawhid of Allah ﷻ, Muslims are obligated to be united in the way we live and in the decisions we make. Our ‘ulama (scholars) have said, “Islam has been built on two words: the word of tawhid and the tawhid of the word.” If we conduct our affairs according to the whims of the selfish nafs (self) and the instigation of the Shaytan, we risk disunity, exposing our weak points to external enemies and allowing them to do internal harm.

We must not do things that will lead to division among Muslims, whether in our family or in the broader society. Islam, Sharia, and the akhlaq of Rasulullah ﷺ are what unite us. Violating these akhlaq leads to division, causing fissure and weakness in the Muslim community. As we hold dear to the tawhid of Allah ﷻ, we must hold onto the unity of the word. To achieve that, we have to be willing to give up things we want that will lead to division and ultimate weakness.

Sayiduna Umar (Allah be pleased with him) taught, “That which you dislike in unity is better for you than that which you are attracted to in disunity.” If my action is going to contribute to disunity, then I must not do it no matter how much it appeals to me. Because what one may enjoy of whimsical pleasure in disunity pales in comparison to the disastrous consequence that will be regretted later in this world and on the Day of Judgment.

May Allah ﷻ empower us to uphold His tawhid and attain its fruit that is our akhlaq and the unity of our word. Amin.
